AI VISIBILITY
The Shortlist Forms Before You Know the Deal Exists
Buyers are narrowing their options inside AI tools before your sales team hears a deal exists. The fix is smaller and more finite than the publishing program most companies reach for.

Not coming up when someone asks ChatGPT about your category is a visible problem. Here is the one you cannot see.
Buyers narrow their options before anyone calls you. By the time you would normally hear that a project exists, the list is already short, and you are either on it or you are not. There is no follow up that fixes this. You were not passed over. You were never in the running.
Buying Starts in a Chat Window Now
G2 surveyed more than a thousand business software buyers this spring. Half of them now start their research in an AI chatbot rather than a search engine. A year earlier it was under a third.
Companies missing from AI answers and review sites get eliminated before the buyer ever makes contact.
G2 follow up report, July 2026
G2’s follow up report in July stated the consequence plainly. Companies missing from AI answers and review sites get eliminated before the buyer ever makes contact.
That research covers people buying software, not people hiring a professional services firm, so read it as direction rather than gospel. But the behavior is not specific to software. Someone looking for a firm like yours is doing the same thing, in the same tool, for the same reason. It is faster.
Here is what makes it costly. Everything that used to catch a lead you almost lost assumes the person eventually lands on your website. The retargeting ad. The nurture email. The salesperson keeping a warm relationship going with someone who said not yet. When the research resolves inside an AI answer, fewer people ever arrive to be caught.
The Fair Objection
THE OBJECTION
If this is starting to sound like the fear pitch SEO firms ran for a decade, that skepticism is earned. The marketing site CXL has pointed out that plenty of agencies are repackaging old SEO tactics under new names and charging more for the rebrand. That criticism is correct.
But look at what it is aimed at. It is an argument against paying a monthly retainer for a vague promise. It is not an argument that buyers stopped starting in chatbots, because they did not.
The honest version of this work has an end to it. Find out where you actually stand. Fix what can be fixed. Stop. If what you are being sold is a recurring fee to keep watching a number, that is the thing the criticism is about.
The Fix Is Smaller Than You Think
The instinct is to start publishing more. That is usually the wrong first move.
These tools depend on how clearly and consistently your business is described across the internet, not on how much you have published. If your website says one thing, your Google Business Profile says another, your LinkedIn page says a third, and three directories you forgot you were listed in say something else again, you are handing these systems conflicting answers about what you do. More content does not fix that. Consistency does.
That is a cleanup job, not a writing job. It is cheaper, it is faster, and it actually finishes. It is also one of the few places where being small works in your favor. A company with fifteen years of scattered mentions has a much longer list to work through than you do.
Where This Leaves You
The list gets made whether or not you know about it.
Your competitors are probably not handling this any better than you are, so the gap is still open. And the arithmetic is lopsided. Checking where you stand takes a few hours. Not checking costs you work you will never hear about, because a deal you were never in the running for does not show up anywhere in your pipeline.
That is what makes this different from most marketing problems. You cannot see it in your numbers.
